Also in Maldonado and only an hour and a half away from Montevideo is Piriápolis, unmistakable for its picturesque scenery of cerros and beaches. The town owes its name to its founder, Francisco Piria, a very unique person who lived at the end of the nineteenth century.

With big hotels and a wide gastronomic offering, Piriápolis receives tourists throughout the year. The Argentine Hotel, on the Rambla de los Argentinos, is a true emblem of the resort. Anyone visiting can visit its installations and its luxurious casino. Less than a block away, the Paseo de La Pasiva houses an enormous artisan fair. During summer evenings, walking along the Rambla de los Argentinos eating an ice-cream from the Angelote buffet and getting to the top of the cerro with a ski-lift are Piriápolis classics. Among the numerous tourist attractions of the city are the Natural Reserve of Pan de Azúcar, a walk along the port and some historical points, such as Piria castle.

Near Piriápolis are several resorts, situated on rocky formations worth a visit: Punta Fría, Punta Colorada and Punta Negra. There are also extensive beaches, such as San Francisco and Playa Hermosa, which are a very short distance away from the resort's centre and are ideal for practicing surf.
